Is it true that 80% of luxury bags are made in China? Tanner Leatherstein investigates the viral claim and reveals what’s fact, what’s fiction, and what luxury brands don’t want you to know.

What's Inside

The Viral Claim That Won’t Quit

A new wave of social media videos has taken over social media, all claiming one bold statement: “80% of luxury goods are made in China.” These videos usually end with a tempting pitch—“So why not buy directly from us for 10% of the price?” It’s sleek marketing wrapped in a familiar digital aesthetic. But is there any truth to it?

At first glance, it’s a compelling narrative. Creators speak with conviction, often in front of sleek graphics and designer-inspired settings. Some even point out that China has opened its doors to short-term visa-free access for U.S. and EU citizens, allowing up to 280 hours to shop tax-free. It sounds like the dream scenario for a luxury lover—designer shopping sprees with unbeatable deals. But as with most things that sound too good to be true, this narrative quickly starts to fall apart under scrutiny.

What Luxury Brands Actually Do

As someone immersed in the world of luxury leather goods, I’ve seen these claims spread like wildfire. And I can tell you: they don’t hold up—at least not when you examine the production practices of true heritage brands like Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Prada, and especially Hermès. These fashion houses operate under rigid rules when it comes to labeling and manufacturing. “Made in France” or “Made in Italy” is more than just a sticker—it’s a legally protected designation that comes with a mountain of regulatory obligations. These companies don’t risk their decades—sometimes centuries—of brand equity just to cut corners. The risk to their reputations would far outweigh any perceived savings.

When Shady Shortcuts Backfire

That’s not to say there haven’t been issues. In the past, some shady subcontractors attempted to simulate Chinese factory conditions within Europe. Workers were sometimes housed in cramped, exploitative environments in order to fulfill the minimum standards required for a “Made in Italy” label. But those cases didn’t go unnoticed. Once exposed, the backlash was severe. Since then, luxury houses have implemented intense oversight mechanisms, often auditing their entire production chains down to the smallest subcontractor.

Why China Isn’t the Cheaper Option

So if production in China is cheap, fast, and high-quality—as many claim—why don’t these brands shift operations there?

The answer lies in logistics and leather. The raw materials used for high-end leather goods are overwhelmingly European—think French calfskin, Italian vegetable-tanned leather, or Spanish sheepskin. Exporting these hides to China, producing the item there, and then re-importing them to Europe just to slap on a “Made in Italy” tag would actually increase the cost, not reduce it. Beyond just cost, there’s also the issue of trust, precision, and tradition. These are brands whose appeal is built on heritage and a specific geographic identity. You don’t gamble that away lightly.

Testing the Theory: My Own Factory Quotes

Out of curiosity and practicality, I tested this myself. I reached out to multiple factories—both in China and across Europe—and asked for production quotes based on the same sample designs. The results were eye-opening. The pricing was nearly the same. Sometimes China came in slightly cheaper; other times, Europe did. But the myth that China is drastically less expensive? Not true—at least not for high-end production done to luxury standards.

In fact, brands like Prada and Miu Miu already take advantage of lower-cost, high-skill regions within Europe itself. Romanian artisans, for example, are widely respected for their craftsmanship. By manufacturing there, brands maintain EU supply chain integrity while benefiting from slightly reduced labor costs. It’s smart, efficient, and most importantly, trustworthy.

A Misinformation Machine

So why do these videos keep showing up?

This isn’t just marketing—it’s propaganda. Likely fueled by ongoing global trade tensions and a wave of digital nationalism, especially after the tariff wars of the Trump era. What we’re witnessing is less a business argument and more a narrative battle—a type of digital misinformation campaign where influencers push emotionally compelling but factually thin claims.

The Reality of ‘Luxury’ Shopping in China

And for those who believe they can snag a $5,000 Hermès bag for $500 by shopping the right alley in Shanghai or Guangzhou? Let’s be honest. What you’ll find are high-quality replicas—sometimes frighteningly accurate—but they’re not genuine. And they’re not sold in daylight. These are underground operations, and navigating them takes serious research, local knowledge, and no small amount of risk. Plus, even these “fakes” aren’t as cheap as people imagine.

Go to China—for the Right Reasons

At the end of the day, traveling to China is still a worthwhile experience—for the culture, the cuisine, and the perspective. But going with the intention of bagging a luxury bargain? That’s just setting yourself up for disappointment. The real Hermès, Prada, or Chanel? It’s not hiding in a street market behind a curtain. And no viral video is going to change that.

So the next time someone tells you 80% of luxury goods are made in China and offers a designer dupe for pennies on the dollar, remember: heritage doesn’t come wholesale. And craftsmanship can’t be cloned overnight.

Explore China, by all means—but don’t fall for the luxury lies.
