THE TUSCANY CHAPTER

Italian Leather

is famous.

The town that makes it is NOT.

THE weight of the label

Two words,
That move money.

Say Italian leather and the price goes up and the questions stop. Nobody asks which tannery, and everyone selling it knows nobody will ask.

The words aren't empty. There's a real place behind them that earned this. That's why the label carries weight. But, it requires some digging to actually find it.

THE problem

The illusion sells.

The people who built it don't.

Italian leather isn't a protected term. Tanned anywhere, finished anywhere, sold in Florence: the words still fit.

So a market stall and a tannery that spent months on one hide make the same claim, and the buyer can't tell them apart.

That's what bothers me. Not the stretch. That people trust it, pay for it, and get something else.

The film - If you haven't watched it yet.

Thirty kilometers from Florence,

a town nobody sends you to.

Florence is where the reputation is sold. Santa Croce is where it was made.

It has been tanning since Florence's tanners had a guild charter for the craft in 1282. Bark, water, time: months in the pits instead of hours in a drum, no chrome, no shortcut, and nothing about it has gotten faster since. The fame Italian leather carries today was built here, by this method, in a place with no leather district and no reason to visit unless you already know what you're looking for.

A handful of tanneries still work this way, and they're struggling. Vegetable tanning can't scale, so the industry moved to chrome and kept the word Italian. The people who built the name are now the least likely to be selling under it.

The town got tired of the label being borrowed too.

They came up with a solution.

The tanneries here ran into the same problem I did. The words were worth more than the work, and anyone could print them. So they organized. A consortium, a mark, and a serial number on every tag that ties a specific piece of leather to a specific member tannery.

Not a promise. A number you can check.

They reached my conclusion decades before I got there.

"The label was built here, and it's still being built here by fewer people every year. That's worth buying from while it exists."
